The EFL app includes all the skills that are part of the print version of EFL. These skills are listed in EFL as
Must Have skills
Should Have skills
Good to Have skills
Nice to Have skills
In the quick assessment, the first two questions are related to the learners ability to use spoken words and whether they have an effective method of speaking. The next 8 questions (# 3-10) are those “must have” skills. These are skills that a person needs in order to have a happy life.
When people refer to “essential 8” skills they are referring to these “must have skills”, skills such as being able to get your wants and needs met, the ability to wait and accept no, share and take turns, to be cooperative, and to perform skills related to health and safety whether it is performing those skills independently, with assistance, upon being directed or tolerating others helping you with those skills. These skills can be briefly assessed using the quick assessment. If you find that your learner is scoring low on these essential 8 questions you may want to focus only on those must have skills first.
When people talk about the “necessary 9” this is referring to those essential 8 “must have" skills plus skills related to leisure making them the necessary 9. This basically is a reminder to users of EFL to focus on those essential 8 skills first as well as leisure skills for their clients.
