EFL and VB-MAPP are complimentary assessments and curricula. They both have their place when choosing an appropriate program for a learner.
VB-MAPP:
VB-MAPP is a developmental assessment and curriculum guide
VB-MAPP uses the scope and sequence of a neuro-typical language development of a 0-4 year old
Programming from the VB-MAPP follows this scope and sequence
VB-MAPP uses Skinner’s Analysis of Verbal Behavior and looks at the language in terms of function
EFL:
EFL is a function-based assessment and curriculum
EFL continues to focus on communication and finding an Alternative Method of Speaking (AMS) that will last a lifetime and fit the C.A.F.E criteria in applicable for the learner (Continuously Available Frequently Used and Effortless)
EFL uses Skinner’s Analysis of Verbal Behavior and looks at the language in terms of function
EFL tracks small increments of progress
EFL skills should be taught in the place they will be used (or should mimic the place where they will be used)
Skills should be chosen based on immediate need
If a learner is becoming older and not catching up to his or her typically developing peers, it might be time to look at a function-based assessment and curriculum such as EFL. If a learner becomes “stuck in level 2 of the VB-MAPP” ,this might also be the time to make the change.
