EFL and VB-MAPP are complimentary assessments and curricula. They both have their place when choosing an appropriate program for a learner.

VB-MAPP:

  • VB-MAPP is a developmental assessment and curriculum guide

  • VB-MAPP uses the scope and sequence of a neuro-typical language development of a 0-4 year old

  • Programming from the VB-MAPP follows this scope and sequence

  • VB-MAPP uses Skinner’s Analysis of Verbal Behavior and looks at the language in terms of function

EFL:

  • EFL is a function-based assessment and curriculum

  • EFL continues to focus on communication and finding an Alternative Method of Speaking (AMS) that will last a lifetime and fit the C.A.F.E criteria in applicable for the learner (Continuously Available Frequently Used and Effortless)

  • EFL uses Skinner’s Analysis of Verbal Behavior and looks at the language in terms of function

  • EFL tracks small increments of progress

  • EFL skills should be taught in the place they will be used (or should mimic the place where they will be used)

  • Skills should be chosen based on immediate need

If a learner is becoming older and not catching up to his or her typically developing peers, it might be time to look at a function-based assessment and curriculum such as EFL. If a learner becomes “stuck in level 2 of the VB-MAPP” ,this might also be the time to make the change.
